Once again Citrix support has been little to no help with a problem that we had
this past week. Here's the scoop:
Farm:
Win2K SP2 Active Directory Domain
Metaframe XPe FR1/SP2
1 Zone -- 15 application servers serving approx. 650 users. Dedicated data
collector.
2 load-balanced Nfuse 1.6 web servers pointed to the data collector for
published application information.
Situation:
This farm has been operating in production mode for approximately 8 to 9 months
now, without issues. This past Thursday, we got calls that users were taking a
very long time to get logged into the Nfuse web page (approx. 30 to 45 seconds
to see their application set.) We went through the routine troubleshooting
steps and then went as far as rebooting both the Nfuse web servers and the data
collector. Even after the reboots the problem still remained. We then began
testing connections to individual servers and sure enough found the 10th server
giving us problems to the point where we couldn't get logged on even through
Terminal Services. A direct ICA connection to this server resulted in a
"Cannot connect to Citrix server: The Citrix server you have selected cannot
be located." We recognized this as the most likely cause of our problem and
immediately shut down the IMA and XML services on this machine. As soon as we
shut down the IMA and XML services on this box, we tes!
ted the webpage and magically everything was working like normal again.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that we were able to troubleshoot this and
determine the cause of this problem, but doesn't this sound like a huge problem
if it were to happen in a larger farm (i.e. the 120 application server farm
that we manage for another client.) We spoke with Citrix support and all they
could really tell us is that this is a problem that they have seen before but
they have yet to offer us a solution. Has anyone had any experience with a
single server having XML/IMA communication problems that affected the
performance of their entire farm and Nfuse page logins? I appreciate any
comments or advice that anyone has to offer.
Thanks,
Mason Dively, CCA
