A couple of things to look for:
Any persistent mappings to shares that no longer exist
Any application that integrates itself into Windows Explorer

I've had situations where both had slowed down the actual desktop
execution.

I checked that one first Greg.  I completely blew mine away and started
with
a fresh one.  Since that copies the Default User profile, ours is 473k.

How large is the profile being loaded?  I found once i managed to get my
profiles down to a couple of meg, "speed to start menu"
dramatically improved.
