[THIN] Re: Sizing Citrix Servers

1. Buy HP/Compaq
2. You have the choice. If budget is tight, you could consider a DL140. I=
f rack space is not an issue, the DL380 is probably a better choice, as i=
t has better redundancy and flexibility / expandability.
3. 220 users. You need 3 or 4 servers. You need N+1. 2 servers will be to=
o few because you will almost certainly struggle with 220 users on a sing=
le server.
4. So buy 3, giving you an average load of 75 users per server and a peak=
 load of 110.
5. If that's not good enough performance, add another server to the farm.
6. Consider products like TScale or Appserve to help optimise your server=
s. Balance the cost of these against the cost / merits of another server.
7. N+1 and good redundancy means that you can rely on the standard HP 3 y=
ear NBD on-site warrantee. And you can consider a 1 or 2 year extension a=
t the end of that, giving these servers a 4 or 5 year life-span.
8. As you have a 60k budget, you can afford to pay me for the consultancy=
 advice (hooray!).
9. Consider sticking to DL380s for your other servers (infrastructure?) i=
f you have to buy any more. A single model of server is easier if you lik=
e to keep on top of firmware / drivers / HW compatibility issues.
10. Consider re-deploying the ML370s as datastore / DC / Insight Manager =
/ etc., but beware of lifespan issues. If you have 5 of these, you could =
use 3 in production and keep the other 2 for spares. If you do this, you =
should be able to get another 3-4 years life out of them.
11. IMHO, W2003 is better than W2000, but consider licensing issues caref=
ully.
12. See point 8. I might settle for a beer instead.

Regards,

Jeremy Thomas

Thanks -

Rack space is not a concern. As we will be moving the old rack to a disas=
ter
recovery site, and buying a new rack with the servers.

So I am looking in the right server range.. DL 360/380, any comments on h=
ow
many users per server - best guess obviously.

Well depends on your rack space available. I just did a customer that it =
was
421 dollars more to get a DL 380 over a 360. Rack space was of no concern=
s
so DL 380s were the ones.

Now for the Blades, another customer needs TONS and had limited rack spac=
e
for the hundreds of servers required. This meant they had to go with blad=
es
to limit the rack space and ports required. NOW. The blades, processor fo=
r
processor were more expensive than the normal DLs (once you factored in
chassis, switch module etc). BUT the savings on not having to add more
racks, floor space, ports, racks, hvac, fire retard, etc.... saved them
dough.

Hi gang - Looking for some advice for putting together our new Citrix far=

Pent III 667mhz/256k cache 1.5gb memory Windows 2000 Server/Metaframe XPe
FR2 =3D20 =3D20 Current user load is 220 users which is 44 per server. Cu=

application set that is used is Office 2000, IE, Outlook. A few business
specific applications, but then the big hog an ERP package that takes up
gobs of memory. The ERP package uses Progress. =3D20 Performance was
acceptable until we went from 180 users to 220 users. Now things are
sluggish and will get worse because new users are not even using the ERP
solution. Also started receiving I/O errors randomly after adding the new
users.=3D20 =3D20 Application set will not change in the foreseeable futu=

what will change is the growth and amount of users. =3D20 So I have the l=

HP/Compaq hardware that I should be looking at. I have a budget of around
60k, for hardware/rack. So this is a good start.

=3D20
I was thinking 6 or 7 dual processor dl380 or dl360? Any one have any
thoughts? =3D20 Thanks and this should be fun! =3D20 Jesse =3D20 =3D20
