I donât claim to be a HDD expert, but the MTBF is less on SATA drives, even
SATAII. They also spec the MTBF for SATA based on 80% duty cycle vs 100% duty
cycle for SCSI. On the manufacturerâs websites youâll notice that they
target SATA for consumers and low-end servers that should be accessed less
frequently, like for archive.

Why not as reliable? Specially with SATAII/300 using S.M.A.R.T. ?

If I inherited them then I could find a spot for them as long as there is good
redundancy and probably lower I/O. They're not as reliable as SCSI or SAS. I
agree with you, though. I wouldn't put them into a new server that I was
ordering.
Good luck,

How much would people trust SATA drives for their production servers?
I would tend to stick with SCSI if I had a choice but I have inherited a few
servers running with SATA drives.
Just wondering what people have experienced. I feel tho if you are going to
spend some decent money on a server doesn't make sense to scrimp on the hard
drives just to save a little $$.
