Wow...now this is getting very interesting...so, last night we decided to
rebuild most of the servers that were having the cpsvc.exe crash. Fresh
installs from the metal. Installed Citrix and just the rollup hotfix to get
us to our last known working state.

This morning on one of the brand new servers we get a cpsvc.exe crash and
users getting stuck at "running login scripts". Again, confirmed that there
are no printer drivers on the box (just what gets installed when you build a
new server) and all printers attached were using the UPD. I look in the
event viewer and sure enough - cpsvc.exe has crashed. I'm speechless.

Add to that that Drwatsn32 isn't generating dumps and I'm not sure which
direction to head. Citrix engineer has me trying a new debugger but that's a
slow road.

Given that this happened on a brand new server that's only using the UPD has
me starting to think that it's something external to the local cpsvc.exe
that is causing it to crash. Have no idea what that might be - could it be
something with corruption in the datastore? I mean this is about as clean as
you're gonna get. :-)

Anyone else seen this to this extent on new servers?

Hi Chris,

We've had unresolved issues with the cpsvc and the HP Color Laserjet 4650
drivers. Cpsvc has real problems with some of the print monitors, HP in
particular. In the case of the 4650, we ended up using the HP universal
driver which doesn't hang cpsvc.

But unless I've got thing wrong, you guys are running the UPD only so cpsvc
really shouldn't break.

Unless you've also got some other printer drivers on the sick servers?

regards,

Rick

You bet - we have a number of versions "out there" right now - all are
hanging...

We have the three versions in the mix right now:

4.0.2258.1 - non public hotfix for cpsvc.exe

4.0.2256.1 - post rollup, 3009, 3047, 3051 hotfixes applied

4.0.2250.1 - after we removed hotfixes 3009, 3047, 3051 to get back to the
last state we were working - and then reapplied the rollup

Hi Chris,

Just out of curiosity, could you check out the version of cpsvc.exe you've
got in c:\program files\citrix\system32?

Rick

Hey there Eric,

That sounds like a great idea. With this client we have our Citrix policy
setup to only use the UPD - absolutely no native drivers, even if they've
been super, duper, mega tested. We just want to be able to rule that out.
Also - we've just imaged all of the desktops (about 60 or so) and they're
all using the latest ICA client - 9.150 so at least we know that everyone is
on the same version. Unfortunately even after removing the hotfixes the
problem hasn't gone away. It seems like there must be some relics/orphaned
registry information or something...we've just removed all hotfixes to get
back to as clean a state as we can, rebooted the machine and reapplied the
rollup. We're running through some pretty intense testing here after hours
to see if the problem comes back but we're hopeful that this did the trick
(I'm thinking it's going to be a late night). If it doesn't, it looks like
we'll be rebuilding servers. Oh the joy!

If you'd like to chat to discuss the details of the environment feel free to
give me a ring.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

We have the same problem and it appears to be related to printer drivers and
possibly a mix of upgraded ICA client software. I would be happy to compare
notes to try to establish a pattern and ultimately get Citrix to find the
issue. In my opinion it is something to do with a rogue printer driver that
is not Citrix's issue, but their software should be able to tolerate the
scenario.

Subject: [THIN] Running Login Scripts...

We have been having an issue where one of our Citrix servers gets stuck at
"running login scripts". We've been working with Citrix, sending them dumps,
etc, etc and we haven't made much progress. The "fix" is to kill/restart the
cpsrv.exe and then users can login again. Users that were on the system have
their printing screwed up and have to reboot their local workstation to get
back to normal - but at least they aren't losing any work/getting booted
from their sessions.

The point of the post is that we've seen this on a few other servers and
when it's happened in the past we've just rebuilt the server as opposed to
trying to address it. Recently we decided that enough was enough and we'd
work with Citrix to help get it resolved and that was fine. Unfortunately
last evening we applied hotfixes 3009, 3047, 3051 to some servers and we now
have 5 servers experiencing the problem. Needless to say, we'll be removing
those hotfixes this evening but wanted to gives folks a head's up or see if
anyone else has been having this.

Cheers,

Chris
