[THIN] Re: PXE Boot to ADS/WDS for Compaq G5s

Yeah, these are some of the docs that we came across too.
http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/07/18/446400.aspx
http://msmvps.com/blogs/thenakedmvp/archive/2007/01/06/how-broadcom-and-dell-wasted-three-days-of-my-time.aspx
http://blogs.isaserver.org/shinder/2007/03/23/warning-windows-server-2003-sp2-may-destroy-your-isa-firewall-without-warning/

We've had problems joining a server to the domain or being unable to map
drives. I'm sure we'd have found other issues as well if we hadn't corrected
it right away. The worst cases we had were some servers that would no longer
boot completely. They were 580 G4's with 2 dual-port NICs and 2 HBA adapters.
We couldn't even get in to disable receive side scaling until Microsoft
suggested we disable hyperthreading in the BIOS settings. We did that, booted
into safe mode, changed NIC settings, then rebooted and re-enabled
hyperthreading. Problem solved! I never heard an explanation as to how
hyperthreading was intertwined with the NIC driver issue.

Based on a test with the recently released (DEC '07) Broadcom multifunction NIC
drivers from HP, I believe that they have fixed the problem. We had one server
that could not be joined to the domain or map drives. Installed the new
drivers without disabling RSS and the problems went away. There is no mention
of it in the release notes for the driver however.

Hope all this saves you some of the trouble that so many others have
experienced.

Cheers,

Eric

Hmm... didn't realize that.

This you mean? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927695/en-us, or this
http://vittoriop77.blogspot.com/2008/01/nlb-tcp-reset-caused-by-receive-side.html

Or...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936594/en-us which describes a whole litany of
character building experiences.

Andrew,
You're welcome! Let me know if you have any issues with that. The other
potential downside to the NetXtreme II NICs is when you install SP2 on 2003. It
contains the Scalable Networking Pack which can cause some strange network
problems. If so, the very latest drivers from HP should fix it. Or, you have to
disable receive side scaling.
Good luck!

That’s it. They also call it a monolithic driver. I’ve been using it
successfully with ADS on DL360 G5’s and DL580 G4’s for about 9 months.

OOOoOOoo I don’t know – I didn’t spot that one

I saw all the other drivers but didn’t notice the RIS one – I’ll check.

Thanks.

Hello Andrew,

Are the ADS drivers similar to RIS or Windows PE drivers ? (I use the HP Rapid
Deployment Pack myself so i am not 100% certain).

Have you been to the new ( awful - older compaq based one was far better ) HP
driver site for the DL360 G5 ?

Half way down the page is a driver update for RIS / Windows PE

"HP NC-Series Multifunction Drivers for RIS/WinPE"

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=uk&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121486&prodNameId=3288144&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-64e3bfc34a2742baa89aa98fb0

Sorry if they arent the same.

Matt

        Hi,

Has anyone been able to successfully boot a Compaq G5 to an ADS/WDS
build?

Every driver I try comes up with a RAMDISK error – I’ve seen an article
that suggests using specific Broadcom II drivers but I’ve had no joy with that
either

        Tia.
