Yes use converter 3 It is a free download from VMWare.
http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/
It lets you connect to a machine while it is still powered on, loads a
little client and you can make a VM of it while it is still running. Note
it will take several hours for this process on say a 30 gig server and the
vmdk file will be about the same size. You may also have to relicense the
OS once it comes up in the VM depending on the version.
