[THIN] Re: Opteron processors

Yes, I am definitely saying that you can run a 64-bit OS with 32-bit
apps on an Opteron. This is why the Opteron is so sweet!

It basically has three modes of operation:

1.) 32-bit OS (or 16-bit or whatever) You can install Win95 on an
Opteron. Or DOS.

2.) 64-bit OS with 32-bit apps. This is called "legacy" mode.

3.) 64-bit OS with 64-bit apps. For now the only 64/64 combinations are
things like 64-bit SUSE with 64-bit Unreal Tournament server... stuff
like that.

But, you totally, absolutely, 100% can run 32-bit apps on a 64-bit OS on
an Opteron will no performance loss. The question is whether MetaFrame
will install as an "app" and work fine being 32-bit or whether it's tied
too tightly into the OS, and therefore must be 64-bit.

I might be missing something here, but you seem to be saying that you
can r=3D
un a 64bit OS and also run 32bit apps in it.. I was under the impression
64=3D
bit OS means everything must be 64bit? (Hence the need for 64bit MF!)

I don't agree with this. There are two different 64-bit modes for
Opteron processors (in addition to the full 32-bit legacy mode). Unlike
the Itanium chips, Opteron can run a 64-bit OS in "legacy" mode. In this
mode, it can run 32-bit applications at full speed. (i.e. No performance
hit for "thunking" or anything like that like when running 32-bit apps
on 64-bit Windows for Itanium.) While 32-bit apps don't get the
advantages of 64-bit integer calculations and stuff, they do get the
advantages of all the extra registers, etc. that AMD built into the
chips.
