Sendmail used to have this as default behavior when no MX exists (not sure
anymore). 

Qmail definitely falls back to the A record for domainname.com when no MX
exists

Ditto for Postfix if you change the setting ignore_mx_lookup_error = yes.

Exchange doesn't.

Not sure about others, but I know that the majority of mailer-daemon's out
there will exhibit this.
