Are you able to telnet to port 515 on the JetDirect? This is what LPR uses. If you've switched to Standard TCP/IP, then it would be using RAW, which is port 9100. If you cannot, then the traffic is likely being blocked at the other end or somewhere in the middle (some ISP's are getting picky). In addition to LPR/LPD and RAW (9100) printing, newer JetDirects (or maybe even just JD's with newer firmware) also support FTP and IPP printing. I'm not sure what IPP is, but the FTP print allows the JetDirect server to act like a FTP server. You FTP a file to it and it prints it out. -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Adam.Baum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 2:53 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: OT - printing across the internet They make it out to the Internet. I am guessing the downstream printer is having the problem. Sniffer shows the traffic leaving my network, but I am not getting a response back from the printer. I am beginning to suspect that it may not be on the Internet like I was told, but behind a Linksys or somthing like it. adam "Rob Beekmans" <RobBeekmans@joul upukki.nl> To Sent by: <thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> thin-bounce@freel cc ists.org Subject [THIN] Re: OT - printing across the 09/14/2005 11:28 internet AM Please respond to thin@xxxxxxxxxxxx g Adam, My first guess would be that you've got some firewall blocking your traffic...... How far do the jobs go? I am trying to print to another site across the internet. The print queue is to be hosted on my server. The printer itself has a direct connection to the Internet via a Jetdirect. By that, I mean the Jetdirect is connected to the Internet. My assumption is that to print across the Internet to this printer, I should treat is as an LPR. Correct? I've added Print Service for Unix to the server so I can configure LPR ports. The problem I am having is that once I enter the IP address of the printer, there's not much more I can configure. I don't have all the goodies that you get when you create a Standard TCP/IP port. Other than the fact that this printer is on the Internet, is there anything else that I am doing that is wrong? The problem is that my print jobs don't go through. I can't despool to the device. adam ******************************************************** This Weeks Sponsor: triCerat Inc.
