the clearing of old backups is the last step it performs. If anything
goes wrong, it will skip the step. I saw this a lot when a backup
plan ran out of disk space. It would just quit.
I found the easiest thing to do is to run a batch job that clears out
your old files about five minutes before your maintenance plan starts.
