I suppose it could be scripted even without FTP availability. But if other vendors make it easier AND they're better at finding viruses, why even bother with Symantec? I won't be recommending it to anyone in the future. When we were running MacAfee I wrote a number of scripts that automated a manual process to check for and download updates from their FTP site and then update all critical boxes. There was a management console that was supposed to allow you to automate everything but was pain to get it to work - a lot quicker and simpler to write a few scripts. If the updates are available via ftp it would not be too hard to do something similar. In the case of VET[2] because the program is not running in resident mode we schedule a script to run their auto update program. I agree that a totally manual process is useless though you do need to be able to quickly update your anti virus utilities is there is an outbreak between whatever update schedules you have set. We often get several copies of a new virus stopped by our mimesweeper box before the anti virus software on our smtp gateway[3] starts stopping it. -Ec 1 though admins whose opinions I respect do speak highly of it 2 which we run on our Mimesweeper box 3 Set to check for updates every four hours -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Durbin [mailto:techlists@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, 12 February 2004 8:24 a.m. To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Anti-Virus Vendors (AGAIN) Thanks for that information. That's great, but it's a manual process. Just what you want to do every day: go to Symantec's page, download and save a file, and then update every machine in a network (or a bunch of networks): To download the Intelligent Updater and update the virus definitions Go to the Symantec virus definitions download page. Select the appropriate language and product. If you have the retail version of Norton AntiVirusT, then click "Norton AntiVirus for Windows 9x/NT/ME/2000/XP," and then click the "Download Updates" button. If you have one of the Enterprise Symantec antivirus programs, then click your program and then click the "Download Updates" button. To start the download, click the first file in the list under "Filename." The file will start with the year and look similar to the following: 20040205-005-i32.exe Click Save. At the next dialog box, save the file to the Desktop and click Save. After the file is downloaded, close Internet Explorer, and any other running software programs. Double-click the file that was saved to the desktop. The virus definitions will be updated. I can't believe this product is so popular - you have to update it manually every day to be fully protected, and even then, it doesn't find all the viruses. I suppose this is an example of the effectiveness of marketing. I'm through with NAV at this point. If so, wouldn't you want a vendor that >updates every day? Anyone else seen these problems with NAV? There is a LiveUpdate from 9 February, but we have the same concerns here. However, Symantec offers two update mechanisms: "LiveUpdate" and "Intelligent Updater". They write on their website: "LiveUpdate definitions are updated weekly, except for major outbreaks, when definitions are updated more often [...] Intelligent Updater is updated daily during the work week."
