I would also say that the car allowance should sit in the bank as public
transport in London is the obvious way to go unless you fancy a few hours
sucking fumes, empty bus lanes you can't drive in, speed cameras every few
yards and if you are lucky enough to find a parking space then you will pay
a small fortune for it outside where you live and where you work

Dude,

Welcome aboard old chap...
Gerrards Cross... hhmmm ok, not the best, but it'll do...
income tax and national insurance will see about a third of your wages wiped
out! still, the beer here is much better and the chics gorgeous. Right,
thats
about everything covered I think :o)

Hi, folks.

I have been offered a position in the UK, which I am scheduled to start in
December, assuming my work permit is issued.

Since, I've lived in the US all my life, and have only been to London 3
times, I would like to ask for some advice from the Brits on the list,
though any input is welcome.

Assuming an annual salary of 50K (nice round number), what might take home
pay be?

What areas for housing should I be looking at? The office is located in
Gerrard's Cross, but I'll be doing loads of travelling, so I don't think
that I need to be in that area, exactly.

I plan on taking the bare minimum of possessions and re-acquire what I need
when I get over. This includes my car. I'll be getting a car allowance.
Does this seem like a prudent plan?

Any advice would be appreciated, especially any items that I don't know to
ask.

Perhaps, if there are any ex-pats on the list, you'd be willing to advise
me.

Thanks in advance,

Spencer Sun
