You can look into using DFS with Win 2003 and file server migration.
You rename you old file server to something different.
Use DFS can mimic your old file server name and point it to the new
file server.
If you use UNC paths, I don't believe there are any major problems you
have to overcome.
The only problem I have read about is if you have a mapped drive to the
file server that is stored on the computer. Mapped drives that are
created through logon scripts are ok.

That's why using DFS is always best for storing this stuff.

I have been testing how to get round this and have come up with one
option
that
is working and will be going live with it at the weekend .
If you are setting up a new file server you can copy your MSI's over to
it
providing
you have a share setup ie(servername\share name\folder sturcture)
If this is the case you can setup your new server with the same top
level
share and folder structure
you can then change the old DNS record to point to the same IP as your
new
server and this actually works fine
you do need to be completly de commisioning the old server though

If you get an answer to this let me know, cuz I've been debating what
to
do with my stuff in a similar situation.

Subject: [THIN] MSI installation point change
Hi ,
this one is not completely off topic...
...we use MSI's to install all apps for an installation point on our
file servers to all our citrix server's.
My dilemma is that I have to put in two new file servers which in turn
will see me moving the MSI directories.
As these MSI's are installed via Group policy , I will have to remove
the install point from the GPO and point it to the new server
location.
If I do this the all the applications will start to install as they
cannot find the original location.
My question is there any way to change this installation point without
modifying the installation is any way ?
thanks
Ronnie
