DO a search on technet for Win 2000 Terminal services in an NT 4 domain that is where the documentation is for the reg hack and why you would use it -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Joe Shonk Sent: Monday, September 29, 2003 2:27 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Licensing server problem Do you have any supporting documents for this type of scenario? I've been asked several times about it but I can't sell the idea without any supporting documentation. All-in-all, it's still a self-defeating solution. The LS should register/publish itself with Active Directory and the TS should be able to query AD for a license server, regardless if it's on a DC or not. Adding a FQDN in the registry is just like using poledit.exe to set system policies instead of creating and using GPOs within an AD environment. It works great and never had an issue with it -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Joe Shonk Sent: Monday, September 29, 2003 10:42 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Licensing server problem Granted it works, but is it supported by Microsoft? There is little information posted on the Microsoft.com website for this type of configuration. Also, this solution entails hard-coding the LS on each of the TS servers. Why couldn't the auto-discovery function be fixed to discover non-DC LSs in an AD environment? I mean, really, we have Active Directory, let's use it. Hard-coding the location of the LS is just a band-aid/work around to another problem. Band-aids tend to fall off/break after a while. That is why I said there is a mass misunderstanding about the LS, no matter which environment (2000 or 2003) you have. Example: Windows 2000 Active Directory, 1 DC. 2 TSs, Windows 2000. 1 machine running Windows 2000 Server that is NOT part of the AD runs the LS. Just point the TSs in the registry to grab the licenses from the LS. This is a Windows 2000 environment with AD where the LS is NOT on the DC. This works. :-) Cláudio Rodrigues Microsoft MVP Windows Technologies - Terminal Server -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Joe Shonk Sent: Monday, September 29, 2003 9:38 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Licensing server problem I suppose everything is relative. The original thread states that he is running a windows 2000 domain and windows 2000 servers... So yes, it does need to be on a DC. Had he mentioned it was a NT 4.0/2003 domain, he would OK with the license server on a member server.
