[THIN] Re: Internet Terminal

The key is to centralize and use your T1 at corporate (might need to upgrade
this).

It still seems like it would be less expensive to centralize the resident
terminals. Cancel all of the local directly connected lines and purchase
ISDN lines back to corporate. I'm not sure how many resident terminals we
are talking about but usually all of the terminals would not be in use at
the same time.

Depending on the number of ISDN lines coming back to corporate you might opt
for a Frame Relay solution. It also depends on whether or not the remote
sites are local calls. If long distance all you need to do is purchase
Metro Lines on your corporate side (or a PRI depending on the number of
lines involved). Some sites you could run 64k and others 128.

I've got sites with 13-15 users that run off a 128k line.

If your concerned about having them come into your existing farm then
allocate a stand-alone box on a separate subnet for this purpose.

This is much easier to manage because you control all access from one
central point and they can use your existing T1 at corporate. You can
eliminate downloads, lock down Active X and other scripting components,
control your Antivirus centrally, control all of your security fixes and
updates centrally.

I would also recommend replacing all of your equipment over time with the
Wyse 1200LE. This device is approximately $300.00.

This device runs a 500KB Open BSD kernel. It can be configured using FTP
and DHCP. In other words, the device simply grabs a config file from the
FTP Server after it gets a DHCP Address. For your DHCP Scopes you can
reserve the MAC Address for each device to eliminate someone just grabbing a
usable IP address. VERY Cost effective and centrally managed!

Here's what you would need in a nutshell
1. Cisco 802 with U Interface for Remote Site (ISDN Router)
2. Cisco 2950 Switch for Remote Site (or existing switch will do)
3. ISDN Mux for the corporate side (like Ascend Max1804 or higher...or
comparable Cisco)
4. Wyse Winterm 1200LE Series
4. Dedicated Citrix Box. (or use existing farm with man profiles...if NT
4.0 domain, if not use OU with Group Policy)

Hope this helps.

This would be a good solution but we have the resident's terminals = outside
of the corporate network directly interfaced with the Internet. = No
servers involved.

Publish a Desktop or IE. Use Group Policy to disable downloads and = active
x.

Convert all of your PC's to dumbterminals (Win9x and Citrix Client). = Lock
down the dumbterminal using Poledit and registry hacks (remove icons,
drives, etc....). Create one shortcut on Startmenu called "Connect to
Server"

For the Winterms you can just connect to IE Published App.

Then again, I guess I'm assuming your running TS or Citrix somewhere at
corporate.

I apologize if this question is a bit off topic. We operate a number of =
=3D non-profit long term care communities for older adults and would like to
= =3D be able to offer Internet access for our residents. We currently give
= =3D them access via our T-1 from the public side of the corporate firewall
= =3D but have had problems with using PCs or standard thin clients to do
=3D = this. PCs quickly become a nightmare with porno downloads, etc. =3D
(residents of off-hour staff, we're not sure) and thin clients =3D
(WinTerms) used just for Internet access leave a lot to be desired. I = =3D
would appreciate any suggestions on an Internet terminal or other method =
=3D for accomplishing access for our residents that is reasonably functional
= =3D with a low support overhead.

Thanks...
