[THIN] Re: Interesting read: Microsoft Malware report from Malicious Software removal tool

I find the reactions to MS discussions very amusing!

I realize there are two schools of thought- that it is no big deal and MS is
everyone's friend. I happen to belong to the other school that believes that
MS is just like the oil companies (and government agencies that tax oil) and
are abusing our need for energy sources to skim our bank accounts! (BTW-
they do it because we let them)

Ok, go back to sleep now, just make sure to keep buying your consumer goods
every day and your gasoline! If it starts to bother go buy a Tivo, an IPOD
and a new DELL computer to keep your mind off of it!

My point is that Microsoft is essentially a Monopoly who's own best
interests drive the development, the pricing and the available technology
options in the market. I have no issue with gathering data about spyware and
viruses statistics, that in itself seems reasonable.

I applaud MS for the advances they have made in the quality of their
products and technologies in recent years. I would recommend we don't lose
sight of the reality though that MS is a monopolistic entity- that should be
cause for caution as the key provider of technology which defines so much of
our modern life, personal interest, personal income and our society at
large.

Just look at history- Capitalism is a great system but breaks down when the
economic interest of a few outweight the benefit for society as a whole.
Think of the early industrial revolution, or, look at energy prices now!! Do
you honestly think cheaper and more sustainable energy options have not been
available for the last 50 years?

This has happened over and over again in Western society with disastrous
results. I am simply recommending that we keep our eyes open!!

Except those other vendors don't own the OS and the majority of other
software used by everyone in the world!

Microsoft has released an interesting report on some results from their
Malicious Software Removal tool. There are some pretty shocking results of
the amount of virii this thing has cleaned. For example 4.4 million
removals of Win32/Rbot, another interesting statistic..the tool cleaned one
computer that had over 251 variants of malware. I can only imagine what that
person was doing on the web. : )
