Jim, But then the image of you in your underwear working on blades just doesn't work for me :) Steve Greenberg Thin Client Computing 34522 N. Agreed... HP Blades and their management kick the sh*t out of any of the other ones. The altiris deployment console makes imaging a breeze. The Ilo rocks! If I were you I would buy a blade center with a huge amount of storage array, buy a couple copies of vmware esx with vmotion and P2V your existing DL380's and have a heavenly environment where you can never leave your desk to manage all your systems. I've reached that nirvana and there is no turning back! If my company didn't make me come in I could stay at home and still manage my entire Center and rarely have to walk in the room. I have to disagree with you about your HP Blade comments.I had to smile when you suggested they were difficult to work with. HP Blades are a doddle and not difficult to work with at all. I put in a brand new rack with Fault Tolerant 3 phase power supplies, 5 enclosures. 40 blades and 10 Copper Gigabit Interconnect cards and cabled in one day. I retreated to my desk where i had operating systems up and running in approx 1 hr. Feet up eating my first Bic Mac and planning my ESX server takeover. About the iLO ... The early versions of the iLo were poor but since version 1.75 the iLo has improved and the mouse sync issues are long gone. The iLos also can be scripted too. You can also connect the HP blades to KVM switches. Cabling. Look behind most server racks and the cabling is often a dogs dinner. The cabling for the HP Blades/Scalable /Mini Bus Bars is so simple and well laid out its untrue. If your using something like Altiris/RDP how many times are you going to visit the console anyway ? In fact how may server admins even visit the server console anymore anyway? Ive estimated that in the last month ive used an iLO three times. Once due a server not booting via PXE properly, once to change the name of an Enclosure and once to remove Citrix from a server after a script refused to. The iLo floppy and CD options are pretty good as well plus they worked first time for me without having to resort to documentation and thats a bonus in my book. As to hardware failures in nearly two years of Blade use we have had one hard disk fail, one psu die and one BBWC fail. Thats a better record than our S*n servers that sit opposite. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeremy Saunders" <jeremy.saunders@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2005 10:41 PM Subject: [THIN] Re: IBM blades for Citrix vs. HP DL360? Interesting view James. Even though I work for IBM, we also deploy HP, Dell, etc. We are part of the service arm. I am infact a HP ASE. My experience has found that the HP blades are difficult to work with. The Java interface to the Advanced iLO is poor (mouse sync is a known issue), etc. The IBMs also have build in Floppy, CD and USB, and a KVM switch. The method to achieve this through the HPs always leaves me very frustrated. People tend to buy the HP blades due to the fact that they are a HP house, and are more interested in sticking with HP. But if I get a chance to demonstrate the two, customers then choose IBM. I think it all comes down to preferences and peoples aliances. Anyone want to chime in with their 2 cents on the IBM blade vs the HP DL360? We're currently using the DL360s but looking at the IBMs...just wondering if anyone had any stories to tell.
