Agreed, when redundancy is required in for envrionments in the 50-100 =
user space, today's dual CPU machines will likely be adequate. There =
are many variables that can affect that statement, though. As we all =
know, bottom line is each individual TS environment requires careful =
analysis in order to design an optimal solution.

When processor is your bottleneck (as is probably your case) quads are =
just
fine.

In most cases it is other bottle necks and this is where the dual =
preference
often comes into play. I addition the majority of farms are not getting =
you
number of users per box/processor and OFTEN need more smaller boxes to
provide redundancy. Like even if a small environment had to support 100
users and could get them all on a single quad I doubt even you would
recommend that.=20

That would work just fine as well :-)

The increased L2/L3 cache makes a big difference on application and
overall server performance, and is one of the many reasons I prefer 4+
CPU machines over duals.

I hope I'm not starting a philosophical debate with that
statement........

Had some reliability issues with the CPUs at some point, but they were
resolved early on.

However, if someone would buy me the latest DL580s or DL740s with 3.0Ghz
P4 Xeon MP CPUs and 4MB L3 cache I wouldn't say no. ;-)

There are a total of eight (8) servers across two physical sites.

Just out of curiosity how many of those LT6000's you running TS on?

Since I guess I triggered this, here are the details:

Servers: HP NetServer LT6000r, 6 x PIII XEON 700MHz, 2MB L2 cache, 8GB
RAM, 2 x 3C996 Gigabit NICs.
Applications: Oracle Forms 6i, Custom VB-based Toolbar, Quick Address
Software (QAS), ThinPrint.
Platform: Windows 2000 Advanced Server running native Terminal Services
(RDP 5.0). Network Load Control: Windows 2000 Network Load Balancing
(NLB).

Network-wise, the servers are dual homed, with one card dedicated to
"front-end" RDP, and the other dedicated to "back-end" SQL traffic.

Stability is fairly good. We are averaging roughly around 27,000 hosted
sessions served per server between reboots, but have seen numbers in the
40,000s.

In an earlier e-mail on this list Sjolund, Dag was seen to say: "we
routinely have 250+ concurrent sessions per server"

Saweeeet. Is what I say to that. The largest number of concurrent
connections I could ever get or have worked on was about 120 at one
client with 110 per server (taking second place) at =3D
another.=3D3D3D3D3D3D20

Both of these were running Term EM applications on older quad
xeons.(read 500mhz and a little up no 3.0 ghz stuff)

So the question that came to my mind is: How many users are YOU getting
per box? And on the big ones (100+ users) what types of apps are you
running?
