[THIN] Re: Hotifx 824309

Sure,

If you go to Microsoft's website, and put in "818528" in the search field
(quotes not included), you should get the Q article "Problems When More Than
One User Accesses the Same File Through Terminal Services."

Basically, if you apply this hotfix, it replaces the two files that are
listed below. After I applied it, I rebooted, and people were not having
the slow logons anymore. They went from 10 - 15 minutes to 30 seconds - 5
minutes. Five minutes is a long time, but people were willing to live with
it.

When working with Microsoft to find a solution to this problem, they wanted
me to uninstall SP4 to see if this was causing the problem. I guess they
didn't hear what I told them, "After installing SP4 on my MetaFrame servers,
my users now have slow logons." They were recommending to uninstall SP4,
and live with SP3, but what would happen if SP5 came out! Because, if I had
a different problem in the future, and called up Microsoft for help, they
would say, "install the latest SP." That would not help, because I would be
back to square one with the slow logins! I told them that I refuse to
uninstall SP4 and just live with SP3 as my solution. I demanded from them
that they must find a solution to my problem.

That's when I got HF 818528.

Solving the problem by not solving the problem is not solving the problem!
(If you know what I mean).

The files that this hotfix refers to are:

Date Time Version Size File name
   --------------------------------------------------
   04-Jun-2003 17:18 5.0.2195.6752 407,792 Mrxsmb.sys
   04-Jun-2003 17:18 5.0.2195.6752 168,496 Rdbss.sys

A synapses of the article is:

In a Windows 2000 Terminal Services environment, users who access the same
file over the network or over mapped network drives may experience problems
after the first user who opened the file closes it. These problems were
documented in the following KB articles:
294816 Programs Run from Network Share on TS Close or Generate Errors

299603 PRB: "Error reading file" Error Message on Windows 2000 Terminal
Services

CAUSE

The Windows 2000 network redirector maintains the data structures per
computer, and therefore if two users on the same terminal server access the
same file over the network, they share the same data structures internally.
When the first user closes the file, the redirector also closes the file for
other users.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to
correct the problem that is described in this article.
Blah...Blah...yadda...yadda...yadda...

You know the rest.

Hope this helps.

Keith
