I liked Claudio's method of running a repair to reset the raid drivers and then use newsid to straighten out the rest. That just leaves metaframe. I saw a before and after pair of scripts on the knowledgebase that look promising. I had a group of severs in which I used an image and then used a SID generator afterwards, and another group that I used Sysprep with, and the Sysprepped servers experienced erratic behavior. The builds were identical with exception of the sysprep, so since then I've just blasted a straight image and bypassed Sysprep. I haven't experienced any issues with this method in over 2 years now. I don't recall what the specific problems were as it was over 2 years ago, but Sysprep was the only variable in the equation. This removes all the machine-specific configuration data (like the SID) so that when you reboot it, it runs through a mini-setup which includes the hardware detection routine (I think you might have to specify a command line argument when you run Sysprep that tells it that you want the hardware detection routine to run, so check the documentation). Two things: 1. Your mass storage driver must be the same, or the server will blue-screen. Sysprep has a mechanism for letting you pre-load the new server's mass-storage driver to the source server during the Sysprep process, but it's a bit complicated and I've not gotten that to work. I never thought to try to load the drivers during the first boot as Angus has indicated. How does that work? I know how to do it during an installation, but not after the fact. 2. Microsoft tells you to run Sysprep on your source server and then clone it. This means you have to run through the setup wizard on both machines. As an alternative, you can clone the machine, boot the new one (OFF THE NETWORK), run Sysprep, reboot it, and run through the wizard, which is cleaner, as you don't touch your source machine at all. This does exactly what it says on the tin! -----Original Message----- From: Greg Reese To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 21/01/2004 16:38 Subject: [THIN] Ghosting Windows 2003 I am adding a server to my farm. An IBM x335. My existing servers are two IBM x330 and an IBM Netfinity 7000. The 335 is already installed and running with Windows 2003 and Metaframe XPa FR3. I have some users testing it and it may get a few more tweaks, but otherwise it is all set. If I ghost it and restore the image onto the x330 servers, will it recognize and fix the hardware differences? They are not that different but there are differences. Then I am assuming there needs to be some renaming etc before I plug them back into the network. They will be keeping their old windows 2000 names. I am just trying to get them running on Windows 2003 and I really don't feel like re-installing everything by hand three more times. Am I out of my mind with this approach or is this possible? Thanks!
