Or use my documents as well as the folder sync option with Windows XP and then you have a local and network copy...great in case of drive failure or LAN problems....
No, but if it's a W2k3 File Server, enable shadow copies. Or if it's a SAN take snapshots of the LUN.

The recyclebin does not work with network folders.

Is the "My documents" redirected onto a network share? If so, that's the reason.

Deleting items in user's MY DOCUMENTs folders do not go into their Recycle Bin.
