Once you fulfill 4.x you can divide them anyway you like. Technically you
are supposed to stop using the XP licenses once you download the upgrades.
However, we have many customers who run on an old platform fulfill the new
licenses for dev/test and then when they deploy the new farm take down the
XP farm. The XP licenses continue to work in the meantime.

The licensing is different between XP and 4.x and do not interact. If you
fulfill your XP licences to PS 4.5 it will not affect your existing XP farm.

and I wanted to give back 10 to check them out and generate a licence file
with the 10 pack for my set up and testing of 4.5

I believe you can, but why? If you are starting a new project, you should
be considering PS 4.0 or PS 4.5. MF XPe is less than three months to end of
life status.
