The registry can be easily exported/imported, the entire thing, or selected
keys. While it may not be ellegant, or a good solution, and certainly not
the fastest and most automated, you could export relevant registry keys,
create some batch files as necessary, or combine an entires server worth of
registry info into 1 .key file and with the click of the mouse re-import it.
You have to be very careful with what your re-importing from a backup, but
it does give you the ability to not have to recustomize from scratch.
YOu could even get away with doing this to "reinstall" software. You'd have
to make sure you exported every key (which you could use something like
regmon to see what keys are added, log it, make sure to export them all,
etc), but that wouldn't be a wise path in my opinion.

I never even brought up ghosting - I would be dubious about
ghosting to like hardware, much less unlike. The whole problem
is the registry technology - or lack of it - that Microsloth
decided to use on NT. It's too dependent on too many factors.
I can't buy 2 servers everytime I need one, or throw "old" servers
that I can't buy replacemants for in the dustbin. We do standardize
on hardware - Compaq Proliant. Unix can almost be restored back to
a Palm Pilot if needed (LOL)!

300 Servers and 2 or 3 years later, your entire building burns down and

I not quite sure how unlike hardware, multiple servers etc came into the
mix.. But I think everyone is missing the point.. If you are using
ghost
as part of your DR plan you wouldn't using different hardware... Most
likely, you have a service plan with your vendor.. If a Raid
controller/MB/etc frys. They you replace the bad components and
download
the ghost image. If you introduce a new platform, then you would create
a
new image. Granted there will be a few images created, but not nearly
as
many as there are servers... With 300 servers, there is something to be
said about standardization. Keep in mind, the image is just the base
OS...
From there, you can use backup to restore data, registry, etc... or use
a
software distribution packages (like IM for MF) to distribute and setup
you
applications.

We have an infrastructure with probably at least 300
NT servers. Probably 25 differnt versions of Compaqs.
We can't afford to have a double of every type of
server, nor is it possible, so we can restore to like
hardware. Even like hardware restores are far from perfect.
We also have somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 different
applications - yeah, we can reinstall all of them, but that
just goes to show how poor restores are. Try NT backup
against unlike hardware and see what a mess you get.
