[THIN] Attn Jim:Update on COM ports being shut down

Jim,and anyone else who is interested, this is my back and forth with
Emergent Online. The solution seems to be RAS, but It does not sound like I
can get my users to a desktop that way. For now, that is what they need, a
desktop. I am not nearly ready to start pushing out my published apps yet.
I have taken a simple NT 4.0 TServer with email on it and turned it into
Three Win2k servers that run, or at least connect to our mission critical
apps. With all that, I am just starting to think about publishing all of my
apps, especially since I am learning all of this as I go. Of course this
list and the contributors to it have been my best resource so far, and I
contribute when I can.

I searched through some of the archives like you mentioned, but I couldn't
come up with scripts that you referred to for resetting COM ports. If you
could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Finally, I thought you might find my emails with Emergent interesting, I
just hope that their solution is not my only one

Thanks,

Collin White

If I were in your shoes, I would put in the extra effort to convert the
dial-up methodology to RAS. But you might have a lot more things on your
plate.

I use Comtrol RocketModems PCI II v.90, six on a board style. I have the
latest drivers, I have been with there tech support, they even got in touch
with Microsoft and Citrix, nobody knows how to fix. I know the way I fix it
is to reset the session associated with the COM port, simple as that, I just
wish I could have it done automattically since sometimes this happens before
I get in to work, and people can't dial in. As soon as one COM port is
down, The hunt group stops working, but that may be another issue
altogether!

No, don't bother. It only resets down sessions. What kind of modems do you
have? Have you looked at upgrading the modem drivers?

Unfortunately that moot point is exactly what I deliver to my clients, they
need the whole desktop (For now anyway, I am working on Published Apps to
get away from this)

So does SMonitor reset the listening sessions, regardless of being down or
not, because that is my issue, the session isn't listed as "Down", in fact
as far as Citrix is concerned, that session is good to go and waiting. It
is when I use my app called Portmon, Portmon shows the COM port being OFF, I
then have to manually reset that ICA Dial in session that corresponds to
that COM port. If SMonitor resets listening sessions, I would like to give
it a try. If an app only concerns itself with "Down" session, it really
doesn't help me. But Jim said it may work, so I am testing it.

Collin,

Yes, EOL Watchdog does reset "down" listeners regardless of whether they are
COM-based or otherwise. SMonitor is the predecessor to the Watchdog. The
Watchdog is much more robust compared to the SMonitor which I wrote back in
1998. You can download and try it for 30 days.

Having said that, It is still unclear to this day why the darn listeners go
down like that. Neither Microsoft nor Citrix have been helpful in working
towards a resolution. As such, I ended up writing SMonitor. This was
originally developed in Visual Basic, but was later substituted by the
Watchdog which was written in C++ as a true NT service.

Finally, we have been recommending to customers that they opt to install RAS
on their servers and use it for dial-up as opposed to Citrix's unreliable
dial-up. By establishing a RAS connection to the server, the client can
connect to an application set using thr PN client and receive application
icons instead of having to create custom ICA connections. Of course, this
would be a moot point if connecting to a server-based desktop is desired.

Marcus, I have three Metaframe XPA Servers runnign on Win2k right now, I
will probably add a fourth next year. As far as the quote goes I would like
to see if this Watchdog service solves my problem first. My situation is
this: I have about 18 phone lines hooked to one of my MFXPA servers and
every time someone dials in and gets disconnected for whatever reason, it
turns the associated COM port off. What I am hoping this service will do is
to reset all of my listening sessions (this resets the COM port too) I know
the software says it resets "Down" sessions, but on the advice of Jim Kenzig
from TheThin.net, he said this program was originally written to reset COm
ports and it might work. I will let you know how I make out, unless you
have a different product that will do exactly what I am looking for which is
reset "Listening" sessions.

Thanks for your time,

Collin, thanks for downloading EOL's WatchDog Services Product.

I wanted to give you a point of contact within EOL, I also wanted to let you
know that we offer free tech support during evaluation and for the first 12
months after purchase.

How many Citrix/WTS Servers are you running ?

Do you need a quote for budgetary purposes ?

Regards

Marcus Owen
