My thoughts may be biased since I work for Neoware, but I think I may add value to this thread. Currently, thin clients based on CE or NeoLinux have been immune to viruses and/or worms. XPe based thin clients can be susceptable to IE based virus' and worms (RPC/DCOM stuff) When MS puts out a patch, we test to see if it affects our thin clients. About 25% of them do pertain. We then re-package them to only include the files that are required (mostly replaced)and provide them free of charge to our customers. If the customer is using ezRemote Manager, they can push or pull the updates from a central location. If the customer is using SMS, Altiris or Tivoli and wants to distribute from these tools, you would need to re-package the affected files, which are listed in our release notes, and put them into the proper format to deliver. XPe comes with an "Enhanced Write Filter" that eliminates permantent writes to flash, instead, storing the "writes" to a RAM overlay file. When power is recycled, the changes are gone, eliminating a worm or virus if your patching is not "up-to-date". We also provide a firewall that you can download for free (to be includded in SP2). I don't know of any customers that have had problems while following these best practices. Some of our customers have purchased XPe thin clients with larger flash and added standard anti-virus packages like Symantec and McAfee. With Neoware thin clients,if you do run out of storage due to adding components (XPe and NeoLinux are customizable)or your needs change, you can always replace the flash to add additional space or to migrate to other OS's. -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Schneider, Chad M Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2005 2:03 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Assistance....those using Thin Clients ( WYSE/Compa q) You may not use the local IE, but you still must patch it, correct? Does CE require as much patching (security) as other OS? I don't believe so. -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jeff Malczewski Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2005 12:11 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Assistance....those using Thin Clients (WYSE/Compaq) We use WYSE CE-based thin clients.. There are NO local peripherals, every printer in the place is on the network, and EVERYTHING the user needs is contained within the TS environment. We went so far with our Win9x clients as to modify the system.ini file and change the shell from explorer.exe to mstsc.exe.. That way, the machine comes up, boots to the nasty green-ish background, and then connects directly to TS. We only use the OS on the box to hijack it's video drivers and TCP/IP stack. No local printers, don't use the local IE, nothing. On Wed, 2 Feb 2005 11:51:33 -0600, Scott Skrogstad <scott@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > Then I would suggest the Capio NeoLinux units.
