Subject: [THIN] Re: App streaming

In addition to the technical advantages of isolation, think about what
it takes to deploy an app to a production Citrix Presentation Server
farm:

*         Functionality testing:

o    Multi-user

o    Non-administrator

*         Integration testing:

o does it break the already installed apps

o    app compatibility problems

o time for integration testing increases exponentially as the number
of apps installed on the same servers increases

*         Stress Testing

*         App deployment automation:

o    Installation Manager

o    Scripting

o    Third Party tools

*         App configuration automation:

o    Group Policy templates

o    Scripting

*         Documentation

Once the app is ready to be deployed the target servers must have no
user connections at time of deployment.

With streaming the entire app integration process changes:

* Functionality testing is easier since isolation fixes many
security and multi-user problems

* Integration testing is no longer needed due to isolation

* Stress Testing is still required. There is a small performance
hit when using streaming.

* App deployment automation is built into streaming. No need to
repackage, etc.

* App configuration automation is built into streaming. Simply
run the app, configure it the way you want and your configuration
changes will be saved with the app profile.

*         Documentation is still required.

With streaming you can make a new or upgraded app available to users in
the middle of the day with no down time.

If you compare the first process with streaming, there are many obvious
cost savings.

If you have a large number of apps, streaming will save you a lot of
time. If your apps change often, streaming will save you a lot of time.

If you have a small number of apps that stay fairly static then local
installs of apps is fine.

One more thing about streaming is that app un-installation is no longer
required. Many Citrix deployments use scripted builds because of the app
uninstall problem (rebuild the server without installing the app that is
no longer needed).

Jeff

Seing as Im new to these features I guess it's a case of pros cons

Pros

Applications that don't work together will work together.

Cons

Overhead

New technology .0 release

A complete rethink in the tried and tested design that we use.

Just been asked to evaluate it on an old server, finding it hard to find

get to grips with defining them on initial review.

What do you think you are missing?

Nothing must be installed in AIE. That is a choice by you.
