Hi Jeremy, if you actually want to use the shadow key in a multi-server scenario, then you have to be absolutely sure the timestamps are synced on the servers or you can end up with chaos. As you're probably aware there are utilities for doing this but my personal recommendation is don't. It's actually dead easy to handle just about anything but binary string values with appopriate group policies, machine or domain level. Between using regtoadm, regshot and either notepad or something a bit more sophisticated like the policy template editor from www.sysprosoft.com, there's just no excuse for not using group policies. Back to your original question though, hkcu\software\classes is actually a separate registry hive (usrclass.dat)with an on-disk location of \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows. It was a late add-on to Windows 2000 server and appears to be handled somewhat separately to the standard profile hive. For example it's one of the common reasons for user profile unloading to be slow and requiring UPHClean. That's a long-winded way of saying I'm not sure using the shadow key would help you here. Anyway you still have a number of options including grafting the appropriate usrclass.dat on to the default user profile, copying the file (with appropriate everyone read/write registry access) to all the user's profile directories, scripting or a group policy if it's not too convoluted. But as far as Notes is concerned, from memory the secret to getting the sendto functionality working to to edit win.ini ;-) Add: MAPIX=1 under the [Mail] heading and try it out. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems Level 2, 30 Little Cribb Street Coronation Drive Office Park Milton Qld 4064 tel: +61 7 32431847 fax: +61 7 32431992 rick.mack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ________________________________ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Jeremy Saunders Sent: Mon 24/04/2006 7:19 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Advice for using the shadow key structure Hi All, I'm having problems getting part of the shadow key to populate the HKCU\Software key, and just want confirmation that what I am trying to do is supposed to work. Notes Client 6.5.4 requires some keys in the HKCU\Software\Classes key structure. It works fine without these keys, but the "Send to" function of Windows doesn't work without it. So I have placed this info in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Classes key, hoping that it will populate the HKCU\Software\Classes structure when the users login, but it doesn't work on any of the servers. I am wondering if the Classes key structure can actually be populated like this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
