Today I went to the park to visit my latest discovery - the Hidden Gem cafe. Located in a spare greenhouse at the park garden centre, it's a little oasis of calm and tranquillity and my new favourite coffee place. It's very civilised. Not only do they have coffee (in a mug, in a cafetiere, latte style or cappuccino), they also have a selection of Sunday newspapers and a very delicious range of home made cakes. It's very low key. Nothing fancy. Handwritten menus. A bookcase stacked with literature in various guises. A view of the poly tunnel and the planted gardens.

On Sundays a local brass band plays. As I drank my coffee I could hear them tuning up and playing their first few pieces. I wandered down to the bottom of the garden centre where the band was installed underneath a rectangular white pagoda. From the visitor and information centre (a green portakabin) coffee and cakes were being served. And on the grass, seated on foldaway chairs or at plastic tables underneath big parasols, was the audience. Many of them looked like regulars. Some were catching up with each other. Some had come alone. It was clearly a weekly ritual for many.

It was nothing complicated. A few chairs. Some plastic tables. The local brass band. Coffee and cakes. One of those simple pleasures that seem few and far between these days. I stood there for a while, listening but mostly watching the audience. Watching people tapping their feet. Heads swaying in time to the music. Smiles on their faces. They were feeding their souls. Simply and quietly.
