[texbirds-freelists] Re: [texbirds] fledgling Lesser Goldfinches - Austin

Lori and All,

We actually had our first fledgling LEGOs on March 18th at Travis Audubon's
Chaetura Canyon Sanctuary (northwest Travis County near Mansfield Dam).
These guys are always the first passerines to get their kids out here at the
Canyon, and the last to produce young in the fall. We had new fledglings in
November of last year!

Other news: Chipping Sparrows are gone (as of Saturday), the Chimney Swifts
are here in good numbers and seem to be enjoying themselves, the Canyon Wren
nestlings are peeking over the edge of the nest, and nobody wants peanut
butter -- insects are the preferred food to raise babies this time of year,
and thankfully there are lost of insects with the regular rains.

Subject: [texbirds] fledgling Lesser Goldfinches - Austin

Hi Texbirds,

For the last 10 minutes I have been watching two profusely begging
fledgling
Lesser Goldfinches in pursuit of an adult female LEGO. They follow her as
she perches in the dead tree outside my window, feeds at the sunflower
feeder, or drinks from the hanging birdbath, all the while pleading for
her
attention. She is very good at ignoring them, which makes me think they
are
not recent fledges.

Fledgling LEGOs on April 4...is that early?
