Hello all,
I think Fred Collins hit the nail on the head when he declared it spring
earlier in the week. Geese and cranes appear to be thinning out
substantially and shorebird migration has commenced. Believe it or not, I
had 9 (NINE!) northbound Wilson's Phalaropes at Redhead Playa just south of
Tahoka yesterday, 17 February. All 9 were in non-breeding plumage. Byron
Stone had 1 nearby on 12 Feb that I assumed may have wintered in the
region, but who knows, that might just be the earliest-ever spring bird for
the region.
Fortunately I have been able to combine work and play and have been GBBCing
like a mad man the first 2 days of the period, and will continue. I've had
a number of noteworthy sightings and may have a chance to summarize them
once it's all over.
