[texbirds] Tuesday morning birding, Hagerman NWR

Big story of the day is that the lake has continued to go down and they have 
now opened up Wildlife Drive.  Sure was great getting to drive that road and 
not have to go around to get to Meadow Pond. Bennett Road to the west side of 
the refuge is still closed, as is the low water crossing north of headquarters. 
 I expect both of those roads to be open before the end of the week. We had a 
good morning of birding getting a total of 81 species.  One of the best finds 
of the day was a Hairy Woodpecker on the road to Meadow Pond. We also saw a 
flock of 30 Wild Turkeys on Meadow Pond Rd.  The Mature Bald Eagle was in its 
usual tree at Big Mineral. On Bennett at the southeast corner of the refuge we 
saw a mature male Northern Harrier ( the gray ghost) always an exciting bird to 
see. There was a flock of 750 White Geese in the field across from MSU #7, 
containing a lot of Blue Phase Snow Geese.
Most duck species were seen were in smaller numbers, but we did see 1275 
Northern Pintails. We found 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers and a Belted Kingfisher at 
Dead Woman Pond. Lots of Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches and a couple of 
female Purple Finches near headquarters. Harris's Sparrows continue being 
abundant.
