It was still and cold today and a lot of birds were active. The white geese
continue in large numbers. Near the end of the day the geese were flying
around a lot near Wildlife Dr. and Goose Point. We soon discovered why as we
saw an immature Bald Eagle circling and gaining altitude as it caught a
thermal. We saw at least 2000 Northern Pintails between C pad and the Goode
area. On outlying ponds we found Canvasbacks, Ruddy and Ring-necked Ducks
along with a lot of other duck species. The Black-crowned Night-heron was at
its usual location in Mineral Marsh. We found 3 late season Lark Sparrows at
the south end of Terry Ln. along with probably 50 Eastern Bluebirds. We located
several Common Yellowthroats in the marshy areas by C pad and just north of the
low water crossing north of headquarters. We found 2 Pine Siskins and 39 or so
American Goldfinchs on Terry Lane north of the church. We got great looks at a
male Northern Harrier at Dead Woman Pond. Good looks of a Winter Wren were
afforded all about half way down the road to Meadow Pond. It is amazing how
fast the day goes when there are so many birds present.
