Brush Freeman and I are in the early stages of updating the TOS Handbook of Texas Birds. The goal is to have a second edition published in 2014 for a 10-year update. Our intention is to make this a real update and thus expanding the species accounts and replacing most of the photos. The second edition will include our take on the status and distribution of subspecies such as was included in the 1995 TOS Checklist by Sexton, Lasley and Arnold. The past eight years has brought many changes to the avifauna of the state. We have seen the ranges of many species creeping northward (or retreating depending on the bird). We will be trying to capture those changes as well as correcting errors from the first edition (Canyon Wren and Field Sparrow come immediately to mind). The point of this email is to solicit the birding community to comment on the first edition. Obviously books of this type rely on the input of birders. We have the good fortune of having the work of the TBRC and the North American Birds column to help distil that information. But noting can replace having observers from all areas of the state take a close look at the book and telling us what we missed. We welcome any and all comments and corrections and I can assure you that we will be grateful to have them. Please send any comment or corrections to me at this email address. As you may know, the royalties of this book go to support the Texas Ornithological Society. I look forward to hearing your comments. Mark Mark Lockwood 402 E.
