The Austin area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 5:20 on December, 12, 2013. Send interesting sightings- complete with species name, LOCATION, and contact information- to Kenny Anderson at kennya290@xxxxxxxxx Dreadfully behind on the reporting- apologies for the laggard edition. -Rarities Found Past Weeks- A Lesser Black-backed Gull and a California Gull originally seen at Bob Wentz Park on Lake Travis were relocated and nicely photo-documented at the landfill on Blue Goose Road in Travis County. Birds were seen at Windy Point on 11/28 and seen at the landfill on12/7-9. Also present at the landfill was a photographed Franklin's Gull. A White-tailed Kite was described at Hamilton Pool Road and Stagecoach Ranch Road in Travis County on 11/26. A Prairie Falcon was seen at Little Webberville Park in eastern Travis County on 11/17. A Prairie Falcon has been seen on Alligator Road near the Williamson/Bell County line- last seen 11/30. A Purple Finch was among a large house Finch contingent at Cypress Creek Park in western Travis County on 11/23. American Bittern was observed at Meadow Lake on 11/30 and Mueller Austin's Lake Park on 11/18-12/11. Horned Grebe was photographed at Bob Wentz Park on 11/17 and another at Lake Pflugerville on 12/10-11. 4 American Avocets were a bit late, seen at Bob Wentz Park on 12/1. An Eastern Towhee was photographed at the Hill Country Conservancy property Nalle Bunny Run on 12/7 and a Bastrop County Home on 12/9. An adult Zone-tailed Hawk was described on Hairy Man Road (great name) between Great Oaks Drive and Sam Bass Road in Williamson County on 12/10. A Broad-tailed Hummingbird visits a Bastrop County residence- last report on 11/21. A Ross's Goose was flying upstream with a Snow Goose along the Lower Colorado River at Big Webberville Park on 12/1. Hornsby Bend has had a few reports of a Rusty Blackbird, bird photographed on 11/30. Vermilion Flycatcher, a male, seen frequently at Hornby Bend's Pond 2's western edge. Rusty blackbird and American Woodcock were reported on a Bastrop State Park survey done on 12/2. The Thayer's Gull in 1st Winter plumage seen at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area on 11/14 in Bell County has NOT been seen again. Great documentation pictures were obtained, I enjoyed seeing those photos of a rare bird in the area. Reports for the Austin area RBA cover a 60 mile radius, centered from the Capitol in downtown Austin. Bird sightings mentioned here have been filtered and scrutinized by the compiler and are believed to be genuine.
