          JD Radio Program Andy Poniros

I've been wanting to put a radio show together about JD with remarks from
everyone that had been part of his life.

This being the one year anniversary of his death, I would like to air it
this September on his birthday.

If you are interested in talking to me via telephone, I can set up times to
record the interviews at the radio station & edit them as I go along.

I would like to speak to people who were personal friends, telescope
builders, Vedantins and sidewalk astronomers.

Hoping to put a wonderful show together to honor a person that impacted the
lives of many, through astronomy, cosmology, religion, science, &
friendship.

This is What We Like To Hear....

Frank Lopez of Stellar Vision Astronomy Shop, Tucson, AZ donated two used
scopes for refurbishing by me. I subsequently delivered them to Page
Public Library and to Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument visitor
center in Big Water, Utah. Will do sidewalk astronomy with them with
these instruments as we are able to schedule cloud free skies. Thanks for
the encouragement. Arthur Cloutier, Page, AZ

Thanks Frank and Arthur!!!

      *Dear Claudio,*

Busy times. Comets, triple moon transits, asteroids and plenty of outreach.

It seems like there is a lot going on with everyone and I'm afraid I might
have missed something in this newsletter. If you sent me a submission and
you don't see it, call me on it!!

We are looking for help with a button design for ISAN 2015. If you would
like to submit a design you can email it to us or post it on our facebook
page. If you email it we will post it and whichever gets the most likes
will be the design used. In the past we've cornered artist friends into
designing the button and it would be nice to get a few more people
involved. Please send us your designs <sidewalkastronomers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>.

Hawaii with John Dobson 1998,

part 3: Squished pitch in the Hawaiian heat
 By Jane Houston Jones

Well, now we had two telescopes completed. I wanted a pitch lap pouring
dress rehearsal Saturday before the kids arrived on Sunday morning. Pour
some pitch laps for some of the kids early. Make sure everything worked,
and train the helpers. That sort of thing. It's a good thing we did the
practice session, as boy did we ever had problems now! As if we hadn't
enough challenges getting materials to build the rockers. We started by
breaking up the 50 pound block of pitch a few days beforehand. Smashing it
to smithereens, and placing it in the coffee cans. Between that day we
broke it up and Saturday, the stuff SOFTENED without any heat. Glued itself
back into one big misshapen glob the color of a Caffe Latte. That's a bad
thing! A very bad thing!

Find out what happened next with that melted pitch

Sidewalk Astronomers in DEATH VALLEY 2014
by Peggy Walker
For the past 45 years the Sidewalk Astronomers have gone to where the
people are........ as John Dobson would say. John's vision to include
Death Valley's phenomenal geological history and the dark sky..... has
placed Death Valley National Park as a must see spot. John deserves such a
well spring of thanks for starting a great legacy of connecting the skies
and the national parks that warehouse these beautiful settings.

This year the Sidewalk Astronomers carried on his tradition and partnership
with the rangers at Furnace Creek Visitor Center. This year, the outreach
was conducted by Donna Smith, George Willis, Bill Nuygen, Rick and Peggy
Walker. They all assembled on December 26th at Donna's flower shop
Samuel's Florist in Burbank and packed the scopes and other essentials for
the trip. Driving instructions were reviewed and off to the races they
went.

Sidewalk Astronomer Donates Scopes to Schools
Prince Edward Island Article about Keith Cooper article written by Ryan
Ross and photo by Heather Taweel, both of The Guardian

When Queen Charlotte Intermediate School students get the urge to look to
the stars they're going to have the right equipment to do it thanks to the
recent donation of a new telescope.

That donation was thanks to local amateur astronomer Keith Cooper, who
organized the Scopes for Schools program to help make astronomy more
accessible for students.
