I remember Arithmetic class in middle school where the @ sign was 
used consistently in text books and on the blackboard to indicate 
price per unit. (e.g., 5 crumpets @ 4 farthings apiece.)

That was, er, 'bout 40 years ago in India (and Japan) where I was a 
school kid. Old geezer that I am..
