To the originator of this message,
Manual degaussing of the CRT is such a common thing that many of us who
have been doing it for thirty years it's a natural process like
breathing. We forget the technique is a learned process like anything
else.
While there is no "only one way to do it," here is what I do. With the
TV on, locate the degauss coil parallel to the screen and turn on power
to the coil. (Some cheapies don't have a switch. If so, plug in the
coil) Move the coil in a circular motion over the face of the CRT for
maybe 10-20 seconds. Gradually move the coil away from the CRT to a
distance of at least 4 feet. Turn the coil perpendicular to the face of
the CRT and turn off or remove power from coil. This step is important
so that the collapsing magnetic field not re-magnetize the CRT.
From the previous discussion, I strongly believe the shadow mask is
damaged and no repair is possible.
To the tech who suggested using a solder gun to degauss a CRT. Sounds
good. Just one thing. Some of us no longer even own one anymore! Used
to buy the Weller 440 at about $15. Last I heard, a FAR less quality
product was about $100. About as rarely used as a Simpson 260 now. I
have used (in a pinch) a ladies hair dryer to degauss a CRT. (No
heat--just using the magnetic field from the motor.)
Hope this helps,
Ken Smith
