I don't think customers think that a fair markup is gouging. We markup our
parts 20% period. That includes parts that customers price on the internet
if they want me to spend my time ordering it. I tell them they can buy a
remote cheaper at Wal-Mart, but if you want my original, then here is my
price. I don't know anyone that doesn't. I don't inflate labor to make up
for it, or to sell parts at cost either. look at convenient stores/gas
stations. They sell their stuff for five or six times what a grocery store
charges. I have never seen so many miniature products. They can make a tube
of toothpaste one inch long and charge more than a king size tube at Kroger.
It looks like they are selling samples. That is how they make their money,
not off the gas. Customers buy their products everyday. They must markup
500% and advertise it to the world and run very successful businesses. I
guess it is legal. So how can a fair markup of 20% be price gouging. I think
our markup is cheap.

my self, instead of marking the parts up and looking like im
gouging them, i add shipping and handling to parts and charge
  maybe higher than my competition for the labor. Which i
think I am worth.
the price of the part may be available on the inter net, but
not my worth or my hours spent.
I dont try to confuse them, people dont like to be tricked,
be honest with them and dont be ashamed that you think you are
worth good money.
bottom line, it dont matter how you split the bill up, the
total is what counts.
