It depends on how determined the customer is to tell me how much I should
charge. They will find out what something costs if they are willing to put
enough effort into it. I charge a reasonable markup on parts. I am willing
to show the invoice to the customer, explain the shipping and handling
charges, the labor and phone costs to find, receive, and inspect the parts,
tell him about shrinkage and inventory carrying costs. I just feel if I have
to do all that education that I should receive a 3 or 4 hundred dollar
seminar fee. As soon as a customer starts to tell me what to charge I refer
them elsewhere. So with all these people poking around about costs, I can
understand a distributor being cagey about releasing pricing information. At
least one that we do business with will only quote retail and has provided
me with a discount multiplier so that I can figure our cost.
