John;
At $3, anything is a Gain.
At that Price you can probably buy a Legitimate copy of XP Update.

OK, here we go. I guess this isn't such a long story, after all.

Basically, I hit the garage sale circuit every weekend, looking for
vintage
electronics items to resell on Ebay. This helps with a little extra cash
for
bills. This is the second year in a row that I've hit this guys sale. He
works at one of the local research facilities, and sells test equipment
that's been cast off, at a low price. I was resistant to contact him for
the
password. I was afraid that if he got a clue as to the actual value of
the
stuff he's been selling to me, he'll raise his prices next year.
Paranoid?
Probably.

So far, I've made a 1000% POI in my purchases from his sale, and I'm not
done yet.

As far as the laptop goes, the fresh install of win XP didn't go as
planned,
even though I had the keycode pulled using rock XP. So, as I'm typing
this,
a fresh install of win98SE is being loaded. I still need to buy a fresh
battery, wireless network card, and modem, but that's not too bad
considering the price I paid.

I just wish I'd waited and tried to recover the password. I do like XP.

Thanks for all the advice.
