In laymans language, Microsoft wants you to pay for Windows for each
different computer that you want to put it on and not just take the same CD
and load Windows on any computer you want to so they came up with a scheme
to force you to register it for each different computer. I gather it
acquires data from each device and computes a number. Change any device and
the number is different. So if you "Ghost" the computer and change something
and use the "Ghost" to reconstruct the hard drive, the system is going to be
none-functional in some way. I recall something about Microsoft letting you
reregister 3 times but I dont know the details. When I read about what
Microsoft was planning I decided that 98 was good enough for anything I
might want to do with a computer.
