But the CRT's didn't implode. I've seen crt's that had burst, broken or
otherwise lost their integrity. Usually if the crt has broken because of an
external force over time (ie like band tightening or train vibration ) the
broken glass , when veiwed along the shear lines will be scalloped or look
something like a topograghical map. An implosion will force all the glass
into the centre of the tube because the primary force on the tube will be
the effects of external air pressure on a vacuum. The reinforced face of the
tube should contain most of the glass that is forced in that direction,
which is why it is so thick. The portion of the tube which will likely
supply most of the small pieces of glass will also be that portion of the
tube which is the thinnest in construction. As far as the failure of the
4-lead capsa in the Zeniths of the early 70's, I also have replaced many of
those caps, quite a number of crts, horiz modules, HOTs, even a section of
the conv yoke. When that cap failed it was estimated that the voltage arcing
through the neck of the tube to the yoke was somewhere between 50 and 60 k
volts, no implosions just bad tubes. The danger one would experience from
tube implosion would be with a tube out of cabinet, on a shelf or in hand .
IU could see a fire caused by someone who in a panic threw water on a set
when they saw smoke or heard a crackle or snapping. ( Seen this too, but not
for an extremely long time, B&W 19 tube set. It was toast after the short
visit by the water bucket) Peter Kowalik Keith's Stereo Burlington,
