Hi Ken,
If you have Windows ME, 2000 or XP try System Restore (Start >
Programs > Acessories > System Tools > System Restore.
If System Restore has been enabled on your system you can use
it to set your system files back to a date when everything was
working normally.
You should backup your files onto a CD before doing any of this just
in case the system takes a big dump. Also, with Windows 2000 and
XP you can use the CD to fix your system, even reinstall without
losing data (if you know how). Contact me privately if you need
instructions (attachment).
If you have Windows 98 you can go to Run > type: msconfig >
press Enter > and restore the registry files to an earlier date
(forgot the name of the button to click).
When everything is back to normal make a regular (daily, weekly
or whatever) image of your entire system using Norton Ghost, Drive
Image, etc. Store it on another hard drive if at all possible.
You can store it on CD's or another partition on the same drive
(not very secure) also.
I would also recommend installing Winrescue. This is a free download
which you can get at download.com This this tiny program you can
quickly back up your registry and many important files with just a
couple clicks. In most cases when things go bad you can easily fix the
problem with this program.
The program is $25 if you register it (doesn't seem to expire -
has a 10 second delay if you don't pay).
