Ed,
Do you see a hole to the right of the load motor? if so, that is the mode 
switch.
How old is this unit? I've seen some newer units using sensors to detect mode.

Have a problem with this VCR locking up on functions. No Play/FF/REW after
about 15 minutes. Acts like bad mode switch...but can't find it. Anybody
have an idea where it might be hidden?
