[TechAssist] Re: SONY SL-5600 (BETA) NO PLAY

You need to check the drive to the capstan motor. Just two wires to the
motor. Also 2 or 3 wires to the FG generator. Those motors would get weak
and run with the high level drive for FF/REW, but not run with the low 1.7
volts for play. Probably goes up to 2 or 3 volts to get started. If it is
the motor, I have a bunch of new ones somewhere in my warehouse.
Even long ago, those units would come in with a multiplicity of problems and
we were usually sorry we started. Sony had a service kit of improved drive
parts, including new reel hubs (yeah, we still have some of those too). The
piano key mechanism would have worn plastic pivots so that the levers didnt
move to the proper positions for the selected function. Big slide switches
on the bottom pcb would develop poor connections affecting video, audio, and
servo (no fix other than replacing those). Electrolytic capacitors in the
servo timing circuits would change in value, sometimes producing wierd
symptoms, like the drum running speed and phase locked but at half speed!
Good luck.

thread around Video Head and the VIDEO head does turn but the PLAY does not
engage. When you push the PLAY button it kicks off in one second.
