Check the caps in the powersupply. I have seen a bunch in similiar model dvd players that are bad. It can just be leaky, and cause all kinds of problems. Try replacing the crystal beside the microprocessor IC. The Kenwood used 27 Mhz. You could also use a frequency counter to verify that it oscillates at the correct freq.
