Check the caps in the powersupply. I have seen a bunch in similiar model
dvd players that are bad. It can just be leaky, and cause all kinds of
problems.

I had a Kenwood DVD with similar problem. Try replacing the crystal
beside the microprocessor IC. The Kenwood used 27 Mhz. You could also
use a frequency counter to verify that it oscillates at the correct
freq.
