I keep a 2SD1879 mounted on it's own heat sink just for that purpose, 
connected it to the chassis with clip leads and monitor the collector 
waveform and DC voltage with the old Sencore scope, the one that still 
works that is, and fire away. If it looks like it will run monitor the 
temperature of the heat sink and let it run awhile. Then if it is ok get 
the original parts.
