| Thomson (RCA) has forced this issue. If your an authorized servicer,
| you have to have it. If you are going to work on any current Thomson TV
| product, you can't do chassis alignments without it. All of the newer
| chassis (ctc195,197,203,211, the MM, MMC & DTV series) have only a limited
| service menu, which will allow basic adjustments only from the front panel
| (basic geometry and gray scale), you need chipper check to do the rest.
| For those of you who aren't familiar with chipper check, it consists
of
| an interface box which connects to the parallel (printer) port on your pc
| and to the tv chassis. It also electrically isolates this connection to
| protect both the pc and the tv. There is also the software program to go
| with this which allows you to perform all chassis alignments, reinitialize
| the chassis eeproms, retrieve error codes the tv has stored, save the
EEPROM
| information to a file and restore it to the EEPROM and retrieve warranty
| clock information for warranty claims (when the set was first used and how
| many hours of play time have been accumulated).
| It also has limited abilities on the ctc177 series chassis to save,
| restore and reinitialize the EEPROMS. Because of this, I haven't had to
by
| an EEPROM for one of these chassis since about 1987! That in itself has
| made in worth the price to me.
