[TA-A] Re: Pan AG-1960 Power Supply

Hi James,

I appreciate the inputs from you, Jack, and Tony. The AG-1960 was fixed
earlier today.

Yes, the STRD6004x regulator was bad. The coating on the board around its
solder joints had turned brown from the excess heat. The regulator had
overheated, and had one ohm between two of its pins. There was a perfectly good
diode (on the board) between those pins, so it made no sense that the
resistance should be 1 ohm in both directions because the diode had nothing to
do.

We probed all diodes and everything around the STRD. The only thing that
seemed funny was the main supply cap, 100 uF, 250 V. It, in fact, had very high
ESR.

Hence, changing the cap and the STRD brought the supply back to life. The
unit is working fine now.

Tony, from Telerama, stated that he had seen a couple of these supplies loose
the main B+ cap, and take out the STRD.

You were both correct. Pretty easy fix.

The VCRs seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately. Someone dropped off a
Fisher FVH-S6800 earlier with a mechanical problem. The tape drive stops within
a few sceonds of initiation of play, rec, FF or rewind. That should be fun!

  Thanks again,

  Mark

With the fuse blowing it tells me that that STRD is bad and check caps.,
diodes. Also, check all resistors to make sure they are OK. I use to get most
of my parts for these from Parts from MCM or a few others. MCM used to have
complete supplies also and maybe a manual. I think they are a Panasonic
distributor, I know they carry many of their parts. Some of these STRDs. are
expensive so, make sure you have no shorts or open components before turning
on. Also, if this unit was power surged, there is a good chance that one or
both of larger supply caps. by main fuse are bad. Wish I had this unit in front
of me. It takes longer to write than to fix.James Daly
